We welcome your interest and questions!

We often provide information—and flounder—for classroom projects. Winter flounder displays have been set up at N.H’s Rye Country Day School, where students have learned about flounder and aquaculture. They conducted substrate preference experiments, charted water temperature, and kept flounder journals.

We also work with MIT Sea Grant’s Aquaculture in the Classroom Program. The program engages teachers in K-12 schools throughout New England and helps them bring fisheries, aquaculture, and animal husbandry to their students in a creative way. The flounder component includes a study of flounder substrate preference (sand vs. gravel), growth studies, coloration changes in different habitats, and habitat preference (artificial vs. natural eelgrass). Schools participating in the program include the following:

  • Swampscott Middle School, Swampscott, Mass.
  • Essex Ag High School, Hawthorne, Mass.
  • Rockport High School, Rockport, Mass.
