Learning from past experience is critical to the success of research projects, especially those conducted in the extreme conditions of the open ocean. The fish we harvested were robust and healthy, and their growth rates show promise for future commercial viability. For that to happen, however, more research and development is required.
With a new crop of cod stocked at our offshore demonstration site, researchers are addressing many of the questions raised in the first experiment. Areas of particular focus include feed formulation, alternative cage designs, containment management planning to guard against escapes, and technologies to accurately count fish in the hatchery and the cage.
