research spotlight

Our first crop cod put their fins in the Atlantic in fall of 2003, when they were about six-months-old and the size of a penknife. Though destined for an offshore cage, they started in covered nursery pens, attached to the pier outside UNH’s Coastal Marine Lab in New Castle, N.H. After four months in these pens, the cod were transferred to a research vessel and transported six miles offshore to the demonstration site and their new home, a 3,000 cubic meter Sea Station cage. A different strategy was used for the 2006 year class of cod. The fish were kept at the hatchery for nearly a year, which allowed them to reach a larger size before stocking directly into a nursery net inside the offshore cage.
