Hatch to Harvest

This distribution diagram depicts the activity over one hour of a cod’s life. To trace the movements of a few cod among thousands, researchers implanted “pingers,” ultrasonic transmitters in individual fish. As the tagged cod swam and fed, their pingers emitted high frequency “chirps” that were picked up by underwater microphones. These cod also wore external tags so the researchers could monitor them by video camera. The video and telemetry signals were relayed to a receiving station on shore, and picked up by Internet in the lab at UNH.
