Researchers at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution’s Marine Policy Center recently completed an economic assessment of offshore mussel culture. The report, entitled ”Business Planning Handbook for the Ocean Aquaculture of Blue Mussels” provides prospective commercial growers of blue mussels with important information for assessing the market, making informed choices about organizational form, and for planning aquaculture business development. The report concludes that farms developed at the proper scale in the open ocean can be profitable.
