University of New Hampshire researchers dive down to an approximate depth of 15 meters to inspect one of two mussel longlines deployed at the Open Ocean Aquaculture site. Each mussel "sock" is 12 meters long. Researchers fill the socks with mussel seed-25 mm mussels-and the shellfish reach the marketable size of 50 mm approximately 8 months later. In initial tests, each foot of mussel sock yielded 4.2 pounds of market-sized mussels.
